Daddy Duke

Update: 10/23/08
Daddy Duke is an approximately 3-year-old, untattooed black and white male greyhound turned into the Ft. Worth Animal Control as an owner release. Ironically, it is the same owner who turned in Topaz and Diamond Jack, and along with Daddy Duke, Diamond Jim was turned in also. Unfortunately, Daddy Duke is heartworm positive, and it is very likely that he also has a tick-borne disease. He is under the care of Dr. Jeff Ellis and Dr. Christy Soileau of VCA Preston Park Animal Hospital. He presently is suffering from kennel cough, and is receiving daily medication. Once the kennel cough is under control, treatment for his heartworms will begin. It is not known at this time if Daddy Duke is cat or small animal tolerant.

Update 10/23/08
Daddy Duke is still testing positive to heartworms, even though it has been 60 days since his last treatment. He will be retested again in 30 days, and hopefully will be negative.
Update 9/1/08
Daddy Duke received his second round of heartworm treatment on August 19 and 20. He has tolerated the two injections well and is being kept very quiet at his foster home.
Update 7/10/08
Daddy Duke completed his first treatment for his heartworms on July 8th. He is now back at home and being kept very quiet for the next 30 days; then he will go through his second treatment.
From Daddy Dukes' Foster Mom:
Daddy Duke is being kept very comfortable in his crate with lots of fluffy blankets. You can tell he doesn’t feel very well, as he moves slowly and sleeps alot. His appetite is very good though, and that is a relief after all the trouble he had in the beginning. He is soaking up all the lovin' and attention he can get out of us!
Update 7/2/08 Daddy Duke is scheduled for his first round of heartworm treatment on Wednesday, July 9 with Dr. Jeff Ellis.
Update
6/18/08
From Daddy Duke's foster mom:
Daddy Duke has recovered from his upper respiratory infection. He is on quarantine for one more week to make sure that he is good to go on with his heartworm treatment. He is doing very well at this time and just wants to get out and play! Unfortunately he has to stay quiet. He is a big boy and oh so sweet, even after all he has been through. His favorite thing is to give hugs; I sit on the floor and he puts his head on my shoulder and lets me wrap my arms around him. He wants all the attention and love he can get, and those strikingly beautiful eyes pierce through your heart! He makes it hard to resist giving him everything he wants! This wonderful boy still has a long road to recovery.
Update
6/12/08
Daddy Duke is being treated for what has gone from regular kennel cough to a severe upper respiratory infection. The medications he has been taken have been modified to a stronger and different prescription. He is holding his own, and is being watched very carefully. Luckily his foster mom has been able to get him to eat, which is something he has not done for several days.
