Nate is one of 9 greyhounds GALT received from a Fort Worth Animal Control cruelty case. He is a handsome, 4½-year-old brindle boy born January 2006 as the “A” pup. His registration ear is double tattooed, so his identity will never be known. Nate was so anemic and dehydrated when he was rescued that he needed an immediate blood transfusion of two units at the Collin County Emergency Animal Hospital. While there, the staff pulled more than 1500 ticks off of him while he laid there quietly. Nate is receiving continued treatment at his foster home, resting a lot as he tires out very easily. His appetite has increased since he first came in, which is obviously a good thing. Nate's condition will be closely monitored for any change. Just like the other rescued dogs, he is positive to babesia as well as ehrlichia at extremely high titers and is receiving treatment. He is also being treated for a huge load of intestinal parasites. Nate was seen by Dr. Christy Soileau at Preston Park Animal Hospital last week for a check-up. Dr. Soileau noted large areas of alopecia on his neck, back, and abdomen, as well as scabs on his neck. It was recommended that Nate get medicated baths weekly. Nate is being fed 3–4 times daily as suggested for gradual weight gain, and his weight has gone from 51.7 to 60.4. While his progress is slow-going, he has avoided the upper respiratory-like symptoms seen by several of the others.
Calm, easy-going, sweet, tranquil... That is Nate. And then you click the catch on his leash, and he is transformed into a squiggly puppy. He gets so excited and his tail turns into a weapon - bang, bang, bang, hitting off the walls and legs and everything else close by. Walks are a wonderful adventure for him – he walks easily on his leash, no pulling or darting. His appetite is steady, and he is getting stronger each day.
Nate is doing well and has completed his medical treatments. He will be retested in several weeks with the hope he will be cleared to be neutered et al! This boy's transformation is absolutely astounding!
Nate's bloodwork will be submitted on Friday, October 8, to determine his health status and if he is ready to go forward with the balance of his medical procedures.
